RELEASED: Finally .NET Custom Actions For Windows Installer

It has been a long time coming, but the WIX team has delivered a complete, documented version of support for .NET Custom Actions for Windows Installer ...

As an open source project, this is not official support built into Windows Installer itself - but it is built by people at Microsoft who are passionately committed to improving Windows Installer.

It is called Deployment Tools Foundation (DTF) and is part of WIX.  This will also give PowerShell more direct access to Windows Installer.

An unfortunate, but understandable, decision by the WIX team was to depart from the basic model of the Windows Installer COM Object (Automation Interface) in favor of a more .NET compliant namespace.  The net effect is that if you are an admin who has taken up some .NET development, you won't have a direct analog between past API skills and accessing the same functionality via DTF.
